Принцип действия механических и гидравлических дисковых тормозов велосипеда в принципе одинаков. Нажатием тормозной рукояти приводятся в движение тормозные колодки, которые сжимают ротор. В результате происходит торможение за счет преобразования кинетической энергии в тепловую благодаря силе трения. Отличие заключается, в основном, в способе передачи усилия нажатия тормозной рукояти на тормозные колодки. На дисковых механических тормозах используется трос. При нажатии на рукоять происходит его натяжение, что приводит к смещению подвижной колодки. В дисковых гидравлических тормозах его роль выполняет система поршней и гидравлическая жидкость. При нажатии рукояти на гидравлике приводится в движение поршень мастер-цилиндра. Он толкает гидравлическую жидкость, которая приводит в действие поршни в калипере, сжимая тем самым колодки.
